2015 Club Championship Held and Financial Report

The Club Championship, held March 14, 2015 paid for the annual dues to the USCF for affliliation fees of $40. After expenses paid, the Club retained $40. The Club's bank balance as of March 16, 2015 is $406.64.

Changes in Administration 2014

Joe has stepped down as President of the Club effective December 2014. We thank him for his years of service. Roger Pagel and Robert Briggs will take on the administrative duties for the forseeable future. The Club's cabinet was moved next  to a private room near the back of the facility. We thank Joe for having a locksmith rekey the cabinet. The Club's bank balance, after paying the locksmith $54.04, is $366.60. And finally, we had a donation of several analog chess clocks from the defunct Drury Chess Club. Much thanks to Charlie Callen for this contribution.

Springfield Open October 25, 2014 Finance

The club purchased 5 chess sets and boards at a cost of $40. A former member, Afzal Chowdhury purchased these sets to teach in Arkansas where he lived and no longer needed them. The Club bank balance is now $410.64.

Springfield Park Board Chess Club Championship 2014 Report

As of 7 April 2014 the Club retains its previous officers. Our new Club Champion for 2014 is Sminil N Mahajan with a provisional rating of 2189.  After the costs of the prize funds ($80), the ratings report for the tournament ($5), the renewal of the Club affliation with the USCF ($40), the collection of the tournament entry fees and Club memberships, the Club treasury has $405.64. In essence the tournament cost the Club $15 to run.

New Club Officers 2013-2014

With new memberships, as of 09/03/2012, the Club's balance in the Club's bank account is $410.64.

After the purchase of 4 new chess clocks and one renewed membership the club balance is $390.64 as of April 21, 2013

We met last night March 8, 2013 and elected the the club officers for the upcoming year.  Joe Brozovich remains Club President and he and Roger Pagel share custody over the Club's bank account.   Rob Huggins and Tyler Harris agreed to be members@large along with Roger Pagel, who will continue to maintain the website. We will keep our USCF affliation and Joe will mail in the Club's dues to the federation.  It was agreed we'd look into purchasing 4-5 chess clocks for the Club but spend no more than $150 and an officer will secure the clocks after each meeting to avoid abuse or theft.  As of February 19, 2013 there is exactly $552.44 in the chess club's bank account.

New Officers for 2011-2012
and Club Championship for 2011

We met last night (March 11, 2011) and the following club members attended:

Joe Brozovich
Trent Burris
Ben Elliott
Jeff Fuzzell
Ed Karabiev
John Last
Will Starnes

We also had one new player show up who saw our club website and came to check us out. His name was Dave.

We elected officers for 2011-2012. They are:

Joe Brozovich - President (10342791)
Ed Karabiev   - Treasurer/Secretary (14025376)
Trent Burris    -  Member at Large (14519214 )
Ben Elliott      -  Member at Large (13820715 )
Jeff Fuzzell     -  Member at Large (12879089)
Roger Pagel -  Webmaster (12523329)

Joe will send $40 affliate dues for 2011 to USCF with new officers listed. That will leave a balance of $424 in the club treasury.

The annual Springfield Park Board Chess Club Championship will start on March 25th. Since attendance has been low lately, a round robin tournament format was suggested and approved.  If there is a large turnout, the tournament can be a Swiss format. However, we felt that the Round Robin would work better because players could play whoever is available on a given night and not have to wait for all games to be completed to determine the pairings for the next round. The cross-table and colors will be determined on March 25th. Then, each Friday night, we can play one or more tournament games until all games are completed. No fee to play for dues paying members. Time control will be Game/61 and will be USCF rated if we have the rating program in hand at that time. Joe Brozovich is a tournament director and can direct this tournament. If anyone else would like to direct this tournament, please let Joe know and the job is yours.

If anyone drops out of the tournament after it starts, that player will forfeit all tournament games so any players who the dropout beat will not get a loss where others would get a forfeit win.

Joe raised the issue of playing a quick rated tournament with the Joplin club at the Library Center. The purpose would be to have some fun and raise awareness of our club to the folks who patronize the library. Joe got permission from the library folks so we can play any Saturday morning or afternoon so it hopefully doesn't conflict with anyone's work or school schedules.  Here is a recent email I got from Martin Stahl of the Joplin club regarding dates:

Here are my suggestions for something on a closer date.

March 12th. Competes with the Mizzou Quads. I don't think many local players would be going to that anyway.
April 9th. Doesn't compete with anything, as far as I can tell. The previous weekend is the Columbia Open.
April 23rd. Doesn't compete with anything. Again, as far as I can tell. The following weekend is an event in KC.

Those dates are the order of preference for me. Also, we may want to limit how we do it, if we get a lot of players. With 20 we are looking at 10-6:20, if we allow a lunch break and do rounds back to back. With round robin, some people can play quicker if they want to but I would like to keep rounds closer together so people don't end up waiting around for too long on games that take the whole time.

Maybe set the times from 10-6:30, and possibly split the group in 1/2 if we have more than 20 players. We could potentially play extra games in that case, outside the tournament (games don't count towards placement).

$10 entry would probably be easier to collect (won't have to make as much change). It might also be nice to have the top 3 prizes and maybe best score U1200 and maybe an U1400. That does break down on the prizes a little but would give lower rated players something to play for too, other than just ratings. I'm thinking $10 each on those, split out the rest based on the your breakdown.

Based/20: 1st: $65, 2nd: $45 , 3rd $25: , U1400: $10, U1200: $10

I think April 9th is better than the 23rd because the 23rd is the day before Easter and many people may have family functions planned for that weekend. Joe will ask Martin if he can bring a team on the 9th. Entry fee, time control and prizes to be determined by Joe and Martin and advertised beforehand. Joe and Martin will direct the tournament unless someone else wants the job.

Respectfully submitted,

Joe Brozovich

Update 02/15/11

It is time to collect club dues:  $10 per year, which, of course, allows the paying member to play in the annual Club championship.  In the next few weeks the plans are to hold an election for new officers and to plan the Club Championship format.  Some dues have already been paid and the Club's current balance as of 02/07/11 is:  $444.53.  Most recently players from Evangel College have been coming to the Club and I should remind everyone our second Club Champion, Ray Jones, attended Evangel and you can see one of his games in the Games tab thanks to Walt Ressmeyer's submission of this game.  We anticipate, once all dues are paid, to exceed $500 in the treasury, at least that is our hope.  We are still trying to locate the WinTD software and if that is not located we'll need to purchase the program again.  If you don't know about WinTD, it allows us to rate and report tournament games to the USCF.  The Club participated in "game day" at the Springfield Greene County Branch library on South Campbell on January 26th  to help the library promote board games.  We were advised  that we may use the entry way of the library to promote the Club.  When, and if we plan an activity, we'll post it on the home page.

After the Tournament 10-17-2010 Club Balance

24 October 2010

By most counts, the Springfield Park Board Chess Open held October 15-17, 2010 was a success.  But for the last round dispute (see Chess Blog) and a relatively low turnout, albeit, a very strong field, we are proud of this event and proud that we could pay out such a large sum of money.  As of now, the Central High School Chess Club has not formed.  We were informed the bulk of those who wish to participate are currently involved in fall sports and the Club might get underway after the fall semester.  After the payout for expenses and prizes for the tournament (see Events and Tournament page for accounting sheets and receipts for expenses) the Springfield Park Board Chess Club has a balance of $370 and an outstanding debit card balance of approximately $80.  I was informed the debit card was lost when Peter lost his wallet when he was out of town on business in his new position, but he advised he would reimburse the Club for that money.  We currently have no more T-shirts to give out so if you wish to join the Club the annual dues are $10.  New embroidered polo shirts are available for $30 in addition to the $10 dues, if anyone is interested.  Polo's are complimentary to club officers.  A photo of that shirt will be posted soon and if interested in obtaining this shirt, contact mae1956@yahoo.com.    The dues, of course, go into things like printing bookmarks, sponsoring tournaments, creating T-shirts, other Club advertising, and maintaining the Club library and the purchase of items like our eisel for display purposes.

Last Friday it should be noted a founding member of the soon to be Ozark Technical College Chess Club came by the Club and played a few games. He also joined our Club.  Welcome to the Club, John Spore.  We hope to see members from that new Club soon.  We also hope to hear from the sponsoring Chess "coach" from the Springfield Public School's "Wings" program.  I failed to get her name when she dropped by the Club on October 15th, but I did give her my name and number if she would like assistance in making chess and its culture more understandable.  It should be noted she did participate in the simul Ron Luther put on for us and hope she got a further appreciation of the nuances of the game.  We welcome hearing from any of the local schools and are open to scholastic players which at one time were the heart and soul of the Club.

Club Minutes

06 September 2010

Since the last update several new members have joined the club and we are in the process of ordering additional T-shirts in both black and heather (grey) and possibly other colors.  During the club meeting of September 3rd the club balance in our account is:  $1042.  In addition we purchased a debit card to be able to pay the USCF online for rated games played at the club.  In addition to the $1042 there is $92 on the debit card and $10 in petty cash.  In January 2011, Joe was asked by the Springfield-Greene County Public Library to discuss our club and chess to a "games" seminar they are holding.  Joe will also be meeting with the newly forming Chess Club at Central High School around September 13th.  Mr. Wallace at Central we were informed will be the sponsoring teacher.

10 April 2010
The club met and one new member joined $15 and received a club T-Shirt.  President Joe Brozovich advised he purchased for the club the WinTd Chess Program to assist the club in reporting rating reports to the USCF and advised the password to the Club's Affiliation with the USCF was reset and the approved TD's for the Affiliation was updated to limit those who can report results to the USCF using our Affiliation.  Cost of the WinTD $90.

Additionally, a general discussion was held by the officers and various club members and attendees of the club concerning  the Ethics complaint filed with the USCF by James Long concerning Mike Clark's use of the Club's Affiliation to report "tournaments" and rating results.  The officers agreed to send President Joe Brozovich other accounts of possible misconduct via e-mail to be sent to the USCF as an addendum to the original complaint.  Further discussion was centered around a chess tournament to be held on October 16-17, 2010 and the ad that would need to be posted in Chess Life's TLA, possible hotels for those who do not live in Springfield, mailing labels and/or e-mail lists from the USCF and a possible name for the tournament.

Further discussion involved efforts made to advertise the club through the Club poster.  Roger Pagel reported that he had contacted the Greene County Public library and the representative there Kathleen O'Dell indicated she would distribute them to all ten branches. Additionally, all five public high schools were visited and Catholic high school were all given the club poster along with three Junior high schools and the poster has been put up at Drury and Missouri State Universities, plus various retail stores and those efforts will continue. Further, The Community Free Press, reported Roger Pagel, had responded to our email and one of the editors there indicated he would pitch an article about our club to the other editors.  Additionally, we discussed other ways to promote the Club.  James Long commented that we might consider a raffle of some sort and/or partner with another volunteer group such as Women's Breast Cancer awareness.  We also discussed the possibility of running a non-rated academic chess tournament.  Roger Pagel pointed out that doing any of these things requires contact points with any organization to coordinate efforts.  For now, these are all on the drawing board.

Finally, we discussed running a Chess Tournament possibly in the early Fall of 2010.  Initially we discussed bidding for the Missouri  Chess Champion Tournament, but Tha Dun pointed out that we should run a large Tournament first to see if we could run one properly.  Mike Clark indicated he would check the availability of the Southside Senior Center in October.  It was also mention that we'd need to check with the Missouri Chess Association to make sure we would not conflict with any other tournaments at that time and to ask what it would require for Springfield to host the Missouri Chess Champion Tournament and we'd need to advertise the event in Chess Life.  Discussion centered on making this a Grand Prix event so we'd need to guarantee $500 in prizes.  Roger Pagel suggested the officers discuss the tournament possibilities and work out the details.  Walt Ressmeyer then declared the meeting adjourned and Roger Pagel seconded.
